I have a 1/2 year old chihuahua who is just 3.7 pounds and just tonight right before bed he started acting very strange. He was a bit lethargic now more as the night goes on, urinating a bit while sleeping, shaking as if was cold or scared. And a bloated tummy. Then dry heaved once. Eyes are squinting swell, he is breathing ok other wise.
I'm very upset and worried i'm not sure what this means. I'm a vet asst but I don't know all the answers and my office is closed right now. As it is 12am, I'm wondering if you might have some answers for me. :(
Hi Carly
You're a veterinary assistant so you realize that something is seriously wrong with your dog... in that situation the only thing I could recommend would be to get him to an emergency/24 hour animal clinic right away. It could mean the difference between life and death.
Obviously I did not get to this message soon after it was posted, and 12 hours have passed since you submitted it. I really hope that your pup is doing better and that you have got him the veterinary help that he needed.
From what you describe it sounds as though he may be suffering from canine bloat. Although this mainly affects large or giant breed dogs who have deep chests, any breed can suffer from it.
Left untreated it can be fatal and I hope that I'm wrong in making that guess. If a puppy or dog is showing signs of serious distress, I strongly recommend NOT waiting for regular office hours but seeking emergency help right away.
I wish you all the best and hope that your pup is making a full recovery.
