13wk Boxer with loose stools
We are the proud almost parents of a 13 wk old boxer puppy. We are waiting for her to be released to come home- she has diarrhea/loose stools and has had this for over a week; should we be concerned?
They said that the vet checked her for parasites and she was clean, they then separated her to be by herself and we were hoping she could come home today. However they tell us she is still having loose stools and should stay 'til Friday and that they tried changing her food yesterday. Does this sound right, should we worry?
Also she always seems to be sleeping when we see her but think that might be boredom - she is low-key but affectionate when she comes out. Please advise
It's very difficult for me to make a judgment on this, but if I was in your position I would want to talk to the veterinarian that this puppy has been seen by. Presumably it's the same vet that treats the parents and other puppies, and I think his/her opinion would be helpful.
I can't say whether this is something very simple, or could be symptoms of something worse as I haven't seen the pup - but any ongoing diarrhea is cause for concern. Changing her diet is likely to make things worse rather than better, as at 13 weeks old she's unlikely to have developed an allergy or intolerance to her familiar food.
All puppies sleep a lot, but extreme lethargy can be a sign of illness or disease.
I would definitely suggest talking to the vet that's treating her, or asking to have the puppy examined by your own vet. The breeder is being up-front about the problem and is apparently doing their best to remedy the situation, so that is all positive. You just want to be safe rather than sorry, so don't be worried about making sure that you have all the facts.
Best of luck. Hope this all works out well.
