3 week puppy trembling after eating

my 3week old puppy is the runt of the litter and we have had to bottle feed her, she has always trembled after feeding and the vet seems to think this is normal but i'm concerned, should i be worried???

Hi
It's not unusual for puppies to shake or tremble after they've eaten, especially when they're being weaned and are so excited and are eating way too much! It is less common for them to tremble after nursing, but it can happen.

Generally it's just that their tiny nervous systems get over-stimulated by their anxiety and excitement plus the sudden intake of all that food. As long as the trembling subsides fairly quickly, they don't vomit it all back up, and they seem happy and healthy otherwise it's not something to worry about.

As your little puppy is the runt, she may have a more immature nervous system than the other puppies, also if she's being bottle fed she will be more stressed about eating than if she was being nursed by her mom. I would tend to agree with your vet and as long as she's happy and contented, gaining weight, and isn't showing any other signs of illness I wouldn't be too concerned.

However, if you feel that there is a problem of some sort, or you have any other concerns about her health, definitely pursue it with your vet and seek a second opinion if you feel it's necessary.

Hope this helps, best of luck with that little one.

thanks for your answer it really put me at ease. the puppies are all on solid foods now and the trembling has stopped although we kept having problems with the little one that was bottle fed, after yet another trip to the vets today he noticed a small cleft palate in the soft palete of her mouth!! which would be the reason behind all of our problems! the breeder has thought all along that this was the problem and she's always said if it is we would have to have her put down but the vet said that depending how she does as she grows she may not even need an operation its 50/50!! we don't know much about this condition and the pitfall's that come with it, obviously we love our little pup so much and want to do everything for her but for the same reason's we don't want her to lead a miserable life being in and out of the vets having operations and constantly getting infections, i would greatly appreceate any advice or knowlege you have on the matter
