5 week old puppy pooping a lot through out the day and stool is runny.

Hi, I have a 5 week old puppy I just bought yesterday, he sleeps most of the day and is having like 5 or 6 bowel movements a day and they are runny.

Puppy eats and plays fine when it is awake. Should I have anything to be worried about? Could it just be puppy worms?

Thanks

New Pit bull puppy owner.

Hi Julie
Young puppies do need to pee and poop OFTEN, and the stress of leaving his momma and siblings (he's much too young actually to have been rehomed as puppies should stay with their doggie family until at least 8 weeks of age!) plus a possible chance in diet, could definitely cause him to have loose stools.

However, puppies are very vulnerable to infection and to several contagious dog illnesses, including Canine Parvovirus aka 'Parvo', to which Pitbulls are especially susceptible.

It's always best to get a new puppy fully examined by your own vet within a day or two of bringing him/her home, and also to get started on puppy shots and deworming. I'd strongly suggest that you make an appointment for your pup with your vet asap so that you can make sure there are no underlying health issues.

As he's very young, and you've only just got him, I think you may find these pages useful...
