My 6 month old blue nose pitbull was running around outside all day and seemed perfectly fine all night. I just looked at her eye randomly and one eyelid was completely swollen and red.
I immediately put her in her bed and went back ten minutes later and the other eye became just as swollen. I am really nervous that is it just getting worse. We are currently in Sacramento California but my puppy is normally in Arizona.
Any response would be wonderful, thank you.
Rebecca
Hi Rebecca
It's possible that your puppys' swollen eyes is due to some type of allergic reaction, as it came on suddenly this would be my first guess.
As she was outside running around in an area she's not familiar with it could be a reaction to pollen, dust, plants or it could even be that she's been stung/bitten by an insect.
If the swelling isn't just limited to her eyes, but affects her whole head/face or if she seems lethargic or has difficulty breathing then you need to get her to a veterinarian right away as she could be in serious trouble.
However, if she seems perfectly fine apart from the swollen eyes and is happy and active, then you could try giving her some Benadryl and see if it helps.. the usual dose for a puppy or dog is 1/2mg per pound of bodyweight, given every 8 hours.
It's always best to get a professional opinion though before treating your dog, or giving any medications, so I would recommend calling a local veterinarian and asking their advice. It could be that
Best of luck, hope your girl is doing much better soon.
