7 mo old Min Pin, Lethargic and has a hot to the touch head

(Sandy, Utah)

We adopted a 7 month old Min Pin. She was spayed a week ago and has been acting like her usual hyper self.

Yesterday afternoon she stopped eating anything except grass and threw up a couple of times. She was lethargic last night and this morning, she is drinking a little but not eating. She acts like she is constipated, strains but no results. She has a very hot head to the touch.

I called the vet but they suggested waiting for a full 24 hours. Any suggestions as to what may be wrong with her??

Hi Kathie
It's possible that she's simply got an upset tummy, perhaps from eating something she shouldn't. That's probably why the vet recommended waiting the 24 hours to see if she improved.

However, it's also possible that her symptoms have something to do with her surgery - unlikely after a week, but still possible. Perhaps an infection.

It's very difficult to tell if a dog has a fever as they are naturally hotter than humans (with a normal temp of around 101F). Dogs with very thin coats (such as chihuahuas, dachshunds etc.) often feel hot to the touch all the time. A min pin has a similar coat.

However, the only way to tell for sure is to have her examined by your vet. If she doesn't seem to improve within 12 hours of talking to your vet, gets worse, or you are really worried, then take her to be examined anyway. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

Best of luck, hope she's feeling much better soon.
