8 month old american bulldog puppy female with diarrhea

by Nannette McGinnis

She doesn't seem to still be gaining and often has diarrhea.

She also sometimes will drag her butt on the ground after she goes.

Hi Nanette
It sounds as though your pup may have. Puppy worms can take all the nutrition from the food your pup eats, leaving her looking thin and having difficulty gaining weight. It can also cause a dog to 'scoot' - ie drag their butt across the ground in the way you describe.

They can also cause diarrhea and vomiting in more severe cases. Your vet can test for worms and treat accordingly. Don't use over the counter products as they aren't very effective and can adverse side effects.

If worms aren't the problem, then it's possible that your pup has contracted some other type of parasitic infection such as Giardia or Coccidiosis, or has dog food allergies or sensitivities.

Again, your vet can help diagnose these, and I'd recommend getting her evaluated asap.

Hope this helps, best of luck.
