8 week old puppy covered with pus filled bumps

(Columbus, Ga)

I have recently taken in a very neglected puppy, he was not being fed nor cared for, he is around 8-9 weeks old and when i took him to the vet he only weighs 2 lbs!

He was too little and sick to get his first shot but was given the dewormer, the next day he began acting like a puppy and becoming playful. But the day he hia gotten bumps on him about the size of a pencil eraser and puss comes out when u squeeze them or he scratch them, what is wrong?

Hi
I'm sorry to hear what a hard time this little guy is having, but I'm glad that you have taken him in and are giving him the help he needs.

Unfortunately it's impossible for me to say what is causing these bumps that you are finding, but if they contain pus then there is infection there. Don't squeeze them as that will only make them worse and probably spread the infection to even more areas of skin.

First of all I'd recommend bathing him with an antibacterial shampoo and making sure his skin is completely dry. Then you need to get him back to the veterinarian as he could well need antibiotics.

Puppies who are kept in damp, dirty conditions may develop a type of staph infection on their skin which is similar to this, and it needs to be treated with antibiotics.

It could also be a reaction to fleas (which I'm sure he had if he was living in bad conditions), or mites, or a number of other things.

As he's been so neglected it could be that his immune system is very weak and he's just not able to fight off these things himself, so they have become more severe than normal.

However, as he seems to be improving and he's now getting good food and veterinary care, with some additional treatment his skin should clear up too.

I hope this helps some, and wish you the very best of luck with him. Hope he is growing big and strong soon.
