8 week old puppy sneezing and wheezing

My 8 week old Pit Bull puppy, who we just rescued from the pound yesterday, has been sneezing and sniffling.

You can hear him sniff, as if his nose is runny. Also, last night in his sleep, he was breathing short quick breaths throughout the night.

If you got this puppy from the pound, then he should have been seen by a veterinarian and have the appropriate puppy shots for his age.

But I would definitely suggest that you have him examined by your own vet to see what is causing him to be wheezy and sniffly. Kennel Cough is a viral illness that is common in puppies (and unvaccinated dogs) who spend time in an environment where there's a lot of other dogs - such as kennels, pounds, shelters etc. It's possible that this is what is at the root of your pups' symptoms.

Kennel Cough itself usually runs it's course and the dog recovers, and as it's viral it isn't treated with antibiotics. However, if a secondary infection results (such as pneumonia) then antibiotics are needed.

It could be that your pup has developed a chest infection, or even pneumonia, and your vet needs to take a look at him to make sure he doesn't need treatment.
