8 week old Shih tzu with heat exhaustion weak and walking in circles
Got Shihtzu puppy at an outside puppy sale all day in 90 weather I have given him IV fluids and glucose (from a breeder friend) after 4 days he is starting to get better. He was very weak and when he would walk (which was rarely) he would walk in circles, he is still doing that some but not as much.
He still has his soft spot which is retty large, at first I thought maybe he was delayed or or had some brain damage but he does seem to be a lot better but not playful should I be worried how long does it normally take for a puppy to get over heat exhaustion?
It sounds as though this poor little guy is on the mend which is excellent, you've done a great job so far and what you are doing is obviously working.
Heatstroke can be very serious indeed, even fatal, and given what he went through he's a very lucky little pup to be making such a good recovery.
I'm not a vet myself so I'm not exactly certain how long the effects could last, or whether any permanent damage could be done from this sort of over-exposure to high temperatures.
It puts a lot of strain on the heart and brain, plus the dehydration makes that a lot worse, so I would imagine it could take several days, maybe a week or so, for him to feel better.
The soft-spot means that the skull bones haven't fused properly and his brain is at risk in that area if he were to receive a blow to it. You will need to be extra-careful with him because of it. This is more often seen in Chihuahuas and a few other tiny breeds, it can happen if a puppy is born too early as well.
I would recommend having your veterinarian examine this puppy to make sure that he's healthy apart from the after-effects of the heat-stroke and to make sure there's no other treatment needed. Other than that, fluid and rest - and of course lots of love - should help.
I wish you the best of luck and hope this little boy makes a full recovery.
