9 1/2 week shih tzu throwing up clear stringy mucus...

We have a 9 1/2 week old shih tzu male we bought a week & a half ago, who has not been wormed & hasn't had his shots. Today he stayed at his "grandma's" with our other dog while we were out for 4 hours. He's done this once before & been fine. This time however he came home, slept then woke up hacking & puking up clear mucus. His nose has been runny a couple of days & he's sneezed every once in a while too.

After he puked several lil bouts of this stringy clear stuff he seemed a lil lethargic until we took him out to the vet. He acted fine. In fact the vet said no fever, felt fine, looked fine. They gave him a lil 'recovery' wet food & his first shots & sent us home. He played & acted fine til around 1am. He woke up after a long nap & started being agitated & hacking/puking up this clear stringy mucus again. He's pooed fine, drank, & ate twice since the vets & now after puking around 4 times this lil bit of stuff he seems a bit playful again. He's still sneezed & licks his nose a lot. What's going on?

Our daughter who's 5 now has done this when she's had a runny nose draining into her tummy while she sleeps. She wakes up throws up clear mucus & is fine. Could this be what's up w/our puppy too? Is this runny nose & sneezing a cold?

Hi
In this sort of situation it's very difficult to tell what's going on and although he was checked out okay by the vet if he keeps doing this or gets worse I'd take him back for a second check up.

I'd guess the same as you, that he's coughing up mucus which is draining down into his tummy. Dogs don't generally get 'colds' but a respiratory infection is very similar. Kennel Cough is a possibility and although this is self-limiting (most pups and dogs recover without treatment), secondary infections can occur and even develop into pneumonia so keep a very close eye on him and get help if you're worried at all.

Good luck with him, hope he's 100% fit soon.

At 7am he woke up, ate his breakfast & went to play but then threw it all up w/the same clear slimy stuff. It was a LOT of food & all unchewed. After he lay down a moment & then went WILD! PLayed & played. I called the vet back as requested because he'd had 2 other bouts of this since visiting & they had asked us to call if he threw up again, but was still playing so they said they'd call back. A few hours later they hadn't called back & he had another bout. I called the vet back. They said bring him in. They took Xrays & said they didnt see a blockage. They gave us some anti-acid pills & digestive formula canned food & sent us home saying that if he got diarrhea or wasnt feeling better by the same time the next day to bring him back for blood work. After the vets he got nauseous in the car (he never does that) then was sick at home a bit. He lay down a long time acting ill then got up, drank & threw up the water. He drank again after, gagged a bit but mostly kept it down. He went back to bed then woke up hungry & scrounging for food. We fed him the special food, he kept it down & has been acting fine since. He played, went for his walk & had another small meal. I just gave him his 2nd dose of the anti-acid & he's laying down again, not acting very sick just tired from his walk. I'm baffled, he goes from sleeping to sicky to acting 100% again.
Being un-vaccinated the doc had concern it could be the start of parvo but w/out diarrhea she said the test would most likely be inconclusive. I called the woman we got him from & talked to her son, they had kept two of the pups from the litter & both are fine, so IDK what to think.
