9 mth lab 1st season very swollen and keeps weeing

my lab is on her 1st season and is extremely swollen.

although she has always been very good at going to toilet outside i wondered if being in season and so swollen this is making her not able to hold her wee?

Hi
Swelling is very normal during a dog's season and the first one can be very light, or very heavy and may be a bit unpredictable in length.

I'm not a veterinarian and I'm not sure whether the swelling would have an impact on her bladder control, but I sort of doubt it. However, your vet would be able to give you a better answer.

I think the most likely scenario is that she has a urinary tract infection. These are fairly common in puppies, especially in females and during their cycle there may be an increased risk of developing one.

A UTI will make her need to wee very frequently, sometimes only passing a few drops, it may also be painful or uncomfortable for her causing her to whine when urinating.

Although treated promptly these are generally nothing to worry about, left untreated a UTI can travel up the urethra and cause more serious problems such as kidney infections.

I strongly recommend that you get your pup to your veterinarian for a check up. If she has a UTI then a round of antibiotics should clear it up quickly and make her feel much better. It's probably pretty miserable for her right now.

Hope this helps, best of luck with your puppy.
