9 week old shih tzu/ maltese mix will not stop biting and is becoming very aggressive to me.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Have had pup about week and a half potty training is going really well but as each day passes she becomes more and more aggressive with me.
She jumps at me because she wants to sit on the couch, she bites my ankles and my families ankles, she started two days ago growling and barking at me.
I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?
This isn't 'aggression' as such.. it's normal puppy behavior and basically she's being a 'brat'!
She needs firmer discipline and for you to make it clear in a firm but LOVING way, what is acceptable behavior and what isn't.
Use the tips and advice on my Puppy Biting page to deal with the nipping and biting. Be very patient and consistent as puppies are creatures of habit and learn through repetition. She won't improve overnight but if you are consistent with her she WILL improve given a little time.
Don't get angry with her, use any kind of physical correction (such as slapping or smacking), and don't shout or raise your voice. All of these will simply increase the emotional level of the situation and make her bite more.
As for the barking at you and jumping at your legs, correct her with a firm 'NO' and don't allow her to get her way. She's trying to control your behavior - it's the canine equivalent of a toddler whining and whingeing! It needs to be corrected and then ignored. She will come to understand that it doesn't get her what she wants.
Raising puppies is very much like raising children and it takes time and patience and a lot of repetition and routine. She's just a tiny baby right now and needs time to learn and understand our 'people rules'. Give her love and attention, but firm and loving discipline, guidelines and routines and she will be just fine.
Small dogs can have big personalities and be very stubborn, but if you follow the guidelines above she will learn. Best of luck!
