A very special pound dog

Four years ago our adopted yorkie dies 1 month short of his 16th birthday . My husband went away shortly after his death , I got bronchitis and was awake more than asleep at night, I heard every strange sound there was to be heard.
Even with an alarm I was nervous, my husband wanted to wait to get another dog 'till after we came back from our sons wedding in the Islands.
Well being alone and awake that was not a good option for me, so I started my search of the newspaper and pounds. I might add I have exotic birds ,and also run Parrot Rescue non-profit, so I needed a dog that would be accepting of the birds, add to that my husband only wanted a dog around 15 lbs or so. I went all over with no success everything was either too large or pit/shepherd mixes.
I knew someone involved with bird that worked in a pound a few towns away,I gave her a call knowing I needed a dog willing to accept birds she said there was a cockapoo up for adoption that day. I drove to the pound coughing all the way thinking to myself I must be crazy I had gone to the doctor the day before and was on 4 prescriptions, not the best way to select a dog! The woman showed me thru the pound and to the cockapoo, she had been there a week and had not been claimed, she was a stray.
Well she was a skinny thing, beautifully groomed but really stunk, in desperate need of a bath. I held her and she was friendly when I put her down she proceeded to relieve herself on the floor in front of me, this was not a good sign I thought to myself. I then asked if she was spayed since I would never want to bring more unwanted dogs into this world , she said sure then turned her over and said not spayed in fact she was in heat.
Well I signed papers to adopt this dog, went home and called my husband he was still upstate with my brother, he thought I was crazy but do what I wanted . I had to go back the next day since she needed a rabies shot prior to being released. I was supposed to be back at the pound at 8:00 to help give her a bath prior to putting her in my car,I was so sick i didn't make it there till 11:30 .
Well this was the best $35.00 ever. Amber is a beautiful dog in and out, she is a buff color her hair, her eyes and her nose the vet said he has never seen this before, she was house broken only went to squat once, I said no and that was it.
She had to stay in the kitchen since she was in heat, she was a perfect lady. I still to this day can not understand how someone would not go thru Hell and back to find her she is that good ,loving, and great in the car and on a leash. Someone went to great lengths to train her,and she must have just been groomed I have yet to find a groomer that does such a great cut as she had.
Might I mention this dog is microchipped and was never registered,I was able to trace the dog back to find the day I adopted her was her 1st birthday. I have yet to meet anyone that does not say if you ever want to give her up they want her she is that good. How much better can a story be to find a new forever home on your birthday. I must add this dog truly loves my husband, Amber is going to be 5 this May I now have 2 other adopted dogs that needed a home.
So please always think adoption first, you may find your new best friend waiting for you .Thanks for letting me share Ambers story.
