American Eskimo Puppy Occasionally Wheezes

by Emma

Every so often, my 4 and 1/2 month old American Eskimo Puppy wheezes. Not in fits, but just a short wheeze at random times. She is up to date on all vaccines and such, eats a healthy diet, and is just healthy to begin with. There are no other symptoms.

It's currently winter where we are, and she runs in the snow a lot. I wonder if she has a cold or something, because the other day we stayed out in the snow for much too long and she got somewhat wet. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Emma
It is possible that she's developed an upper respiratory tract infection and that's what's causing the 'wheezing'. But you would generally expect to see other symptoms as well, such as loss of appetite, lethargy, discharge from nose, coughing etc.

If this 'wheezing' sounds more like sneezing, it's possible she's 'reverse sneezing' which some pups do, although it's usually seen in the small and tiny breeds. It's sort of a bronchial spasm which can be brought on by excitement or high activity levels, and isn't anything to worry about. Pups often grow out of it and it's not harmful.

However, only a veterinarian can make an accurate assessment of what's causing your puppys' symptoms so I strongly suggest that you have your vet take a look at her to make sure all is well.

Good luck with your puppy.
