blood in stool and moaning?

by Katie

I have an 8 week old Whippet that I got yesterday. He has a bit of blood in his stool. It's not really hard stool, kind of soft, with blood at the end. Also, when we pick him up, he moans. Although he also moans when he is just moving around in his sleep.

He's an active dog and seems to be healthy, eats and drinks. Should I be worried about the blood in his stool? I have a vet appointment tomorrow but I don't know if this is something that needs to be checked out asap.

Hi Katie
As your pup seems to be healthy overall, is eating and drinking and playing normally, and his stools aren't really loose as in puppy diarrhea, I personally don't think this is an emergency situation, but he definitely needs to be examined by a vet so keep tomorrows' appointment for sure.

The 'moaning' could be a sign that he's in pain, but it could also just be 'verbalizing' which some dogs do. I have Rottweilers and they verbalize or 'talk' a lot. I'm not sure about whippets as I'm not familiar with them myself.

If your pup seems to be very stressed ie. is panting, whining, pacing excessively, or his stools get looser, he vomits, or causes you concern, then I'd recommend calling an emergency vet or taking him to a 24 hour pet hospital as a precaution. It's always better to be safe than sorry in those situations. Otherwise I think tomorrows' appointment should be enough.

I hope this helps and wish you the best of luck with your new pup.
