Hello, I have a 2 week old puppy who was attacked at 2 days old. I am now taking care of him and bottle feeding him.
I have read that a puppy will stop eating when they are full. My puppy will drink even when his stomach is really fat and hard.
Common sense tells me he needs to stop eating, but the thing is he still seems hungry when I stop him.
Should I space out his feedings more during the day?
Hi Kim
Generally puppies will stop drinking once they're little tummies are full, but not always. There are always going to be greedy little ones who want to eat until they're fit to explode!
Overfeeding puts a lot of strain on a tiny body and yes, I'd recommend feeding him less at a time, but more often. That way he should still get the nutrition his body needs, but without the bloating and discomfort.
I'd recommend that you take a look at my New Born Puppies page as it has lots of tips and advice to help you and gives you information on how many calories a puppy needs per day etc.
Also, remember to 'burp' your puppy as it helps to release the air that gets trapped when he's feeding (bottle fed puppies swallow more air than those that are nursing from their momma) and makes him more comfortable.
Hope this helps, best of luck with your little guy.
