i have an 8 week old male boxer he started coughing last night like he needed a drink of water so i gave him a drink and he quit and hasn't coughed since.
I don't know if its kennel cough or just a scratch in his throat but he doesn't have a runny nose, he doesn't whimper or cry, stool is good he's been dewormed and has had his shots.
Hi
I wouldn't worry too much about one cough in the night, chances are he just inhaled something or got some saliva caught in his throat etc.
If he is happy and healthy otherwise and the coughing was an isolated incident, then he is most likely just fine. I know how worrying it can be to have a young puppy and it's definitely better to be over-cautious than under-cautious... but in this case I think it's probably nothing to worry about.
However, if he does continue to cough, or displays any other signs of possible dog illnesses, do have him examined by your vet right away. It's always easier to treat something early on, rather than waiting until it's taken hold.
Kennel cough is usually a self-limiting condition (meaning that a pup or dog will recover in their own time, often without treatment), and because it's a virus there is no real treatment. But, antibiotics can help if a secondary infection arises - such as an upper respiratory infection or pneumonia.
To be safe, if you are worried at all get your vet to take a look him. Good luck, hope he gets a clean bill of health!
