chihuahua dandruff when he is scared

I have a 13 week chihuahua and when he gets nervous I noticed he produces flakes, similar to dandruff.

How can I help prevent the dandruff?

Puppies and dogs can have all sorts of skin problems including excessive flaking, itching, rashes etc. I've never known them to be an 'instant reaction' to fear or anxiety though.

If you're bathing your puppy a lot it could be that his sensitive skin has become over dry and that is causing the flaking. Or it could be that he's sensitive or allergic to ingredients in his food that are causing a reaction on his skin. (ie dog food allergies)

If you really think that the skin condition is made worse by his anxiety, then that's what you need to work on - improving his self-confidence and reducing his fears.

Some dogs are naturally (genetically) fearful, others have experienced situations that have caused them to become nervous. You need to be sure to treat him in a positive, loving way and give him a daily routine to feel secure. Loving discipline, slow-but-steady socialization, and daily training sessions that are fun and that he can be successful in, also help.

Hope this helps some. If his skin condition doesn't improve, or gets worse, in spite of the above tips, then I'd suggest talking it over with your vet. Best of luck with him.
