clicking noise when sniffing intently

My 4th month yellow lab makes a clicking noise when he sniffs intently- it's like a flap opening and closing. i own several dogs and other labs which do not do this.

breathes normal- very playful and energetic- eats like a pig weight 35lbs.

Hi Chris
This isn't something I've ever noticed on a dog and I'm not a veterinarian I'm afraid so I really can't say what is causing this odd noise.

It sounds as though it could be a weak spot somewhere in her nasal cavity perhaps, or maybe a small blockage of some sort (if she inhaled something and it got stuck and then moves when she sniffs intently?)

I really can only recommend you have your veterinarian take a look up her nose to make sure that there's no blockage.

Luckily overall it sounds as though she's perfectly healthy so I doubt it's anything to worry unduly about. However, as Labs do love to use their noses it's probably something you should check out with your vet.

You could also try asking the same question of an online veterinarian in case this is something that is known to happen in some dogs, rather than being a one-off because she's inhaled something. You can use this link if you'd like to do that.... Ask Your Dog Veterinary Question Now

Sorry I couldn't help more. Best of luck with your dogs.

Sniffer clicker NEW
by: Kim

Our 4 months old, female, Basset/Boston mix clucks when she is sniffing intently during our walks. That's the only time we've known her to do it. At first we thought she had the hiccups but soon realized that she was making the noise when she hones in on a scent. We've had many dogs, many breeds and never had a clucker before. We love our little clucker.

Clicking while sniffing NEW
by: Anonymous

Have read elsewhere that it's because your dog is licking the roof of his mouth while smelling. It helps them bring in the scents while sniffing intently. Try it yourself....try licking the roof of your mouth while you sniff and you'll get an idea of what's going on. It's supposedly more of a trait in labs and our labradoodle is a really loud sniffer clicker. Hope this helps answer the concern.

My dog does it too but he salivates. I think he smells other female dogs and it's a issue of not being fixed
