Common Dog Health Problems

common dog health problems

Poor Fido, it's no fun being sick!

Common dog health problems range from minor annoyances, to major crises.... and knowing how to recognize the most common canine health issues before they cause serious trouble is very important.

If you're a new puppy owner, keeping your little guy or girl healthy is going to be at the top of your list of priorities. There are two main approaches to keeping your dog healthy - prevention and cure.

Preventing Common Dog Health Problems

As the old saying goes 'an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure' (or something to that effect!) and there are lots of ways that you can help prevent some of the most common dog health problems from ever rearing their ugly heads.

Here is a list of things you can do to protect your puppy or dog right from day one (click on the links to learn more about each topic).......

  • Vaccinations - Making sure that your puppy gets all his vaccinations on time (and then has his annual/bi-annual vaccinations too) can prevent a whole lot of trouble. Many of the most serious dog illnesses target puppies and can kill an unvaccinated pup very quickly.

  • De-worm your pup - Almost all puppies have worms to begin with, and to prevent these nasty parasites from becoming a real problem down the road, your pup should be dewormed BY YOUR VETERINARIAN. Usually this is done routinely when he gets his puppy shots.

  • Prevent flea and tick infestation - These parasites carry diseases which can make your pup quite sick. Using an effective flea and tick preventative is the only way to be sure that Fido is protected.

  • Heartworm prevention - Heartworms are arguably the most dangerous parasite your pup faces, and by the time symptoms of this condition appear, a dog is already very, very sick. Treatment is long, expensive and dangerous. Prevention is easy. A monthly heartworm tablet can save your dog from a slow and painful disease, or even death.

  • Know the dangers lurking in your home - There are many common human foods and other household products that are dangerously toxic to your dog. Keep your pup safe by making sure he never has access to any of these, and also learn what to do if your pup should be a victim of dog poisoning of any sort.

  • Purchase pet health insurance - Yes, this may sound strange, but knowing that you can afford to take care of your dog health problems without emptying your bank account or going into debt, can make a big difference. Waiting too long to seek veterinary attention because of money worries can have a huge price-tag..... and sadly, not just a financial one.

  • Spaying or neutering your pup - Research has shown that spaying or neutering your pup gives him (or her) the best possible protection against reproductive organ cancers and other conditions. Having the procedure done before your pup is 6 months old is optimum.

Feeding your puppy or dog a nutritious, premium quality food and making sure he gets enough exercise are also very important!

These play a big role in ensuring that he grows up healthy and strong, and help to prevent bone/joint and other developmental issues.

Recognizing Common Dog Health Problems

Although the proper prevention techniques above can go a long way towards keeping Fido happy and healthy, there is still a chance that he will fall ill, or be injured in some way.

Hopefully, any canine health issues he faces will be minor, but you stand a better chance of preventing any problems that arise from becoming serious ones if you know the signs of trouble.

Sometimes one symptom can be a sign of something simple, or something potentially dangerous, and the trick is to know how to tell the difference!

Two canine illness symptoms that fit this bill are diarrhea and/or vomiting. Anything from a sudden change in diet, to a life-threatening condition, can trigger these problems.

Check out these links for an in-detail look at both these common dog health problems, and all the information and advice you need.

Puppy Diarrhea

Puppy Vomiting

Other common symptoms of canine disease include marked lethargy (apparent exhaustion), loss of appetite, disinterest or depression. If any of these are combined with puppy vomiting and/diarrhea, seek veterinary help immediately!

There are a whole host of canine illnesses which could affect your pup. You can find a comprehensive list of these (including symptoms and treatment options) on my Dog Illnesses page.

Some of the more serious canine diseases and common dog health problems are covered in more detail on these pages -

Need A Bit Of Help?

There's a lot of canine health information on this page... and on this site!

If you want to find every article that relates to a specific canine illness, common dog health problem, or individual symptom, simply type the word/words (ie 'diarrhea' or 'loss of appetite') into the searchbox below and hit 'Search'.

In the blink of an eye you will have a complete list of pages full of tips and advice. Couldn't be easier :o)

Or, if you'd like to get a professional 'take' on your question about common dog health problems, you can use the box below to ask a qualified veterinarian for help.

The answer will come back quickly (usually within a few hours, often much sooner), and for an average cost of only $12 it's a very cost-effective way of getting quick, professional help....

IMPORTANT: If your puppy or dog is suffering from the symptoms of a potentially serious canine illness or condition, if he seems to be getting worse, is injured.....

or even if you are just unsure and concerned....

PLEASE don't take any chances. Take him to your veterinarian (or a 24 hour pet hospital if necessary) immediately. It's always better to be safe than sorry!
