How to take cute puppy photos
Want to take some cute puppy photos for the family album? That adorably cute and cuddly puppy in your lap won't stay small forever; before you know it she'll be all grown up (although of course she'll still be cute) so the sooner you start the better! You can even make her own album, scrapbook or bragbook so you can share her unbelievable good looks with everyone you know.
Puppy photos are irresistible - those chubby little tummies, big eyes and over-sized paws - and pets are one of the most photographed subjects around (next to children). However, capturing their magic on film is not as easy as you might think.
Puppies are wriggly, squirmy, licky little bundles of energy and getting them to stay in one spot for more than 3.2 seconds is almost impossible, unless they're sleeping that is. While a napping puppy makes an adorable subject for cute puppy photos, you don't want your entire album to consist of Fido sleeping so here's a few tips to make those other photos turn out great too!
Taking photos indoors
If you want to take cute puppy photos indoors there are pros and cons to consider. Containing your puppy in a smaller area is a plus, and obviously if it's raining or miserable outside you won't get the drenched-dog look, but the lighting can be a problem. If your puppy is looking directly at the camera and you use a flash, his eyes are going to glow bright red. Even if he behaves like a little demon at times you don't want him to look like one do you? When you want to take cute puppy photos you can avoid this by making sure the whole room is bright and well lit and by trying not to take a photo of little Fido looking while he's looking straight at the camera.
Perhaps have him focus on a favorite toy or have someone else distract him so that he looks away from the camera. Of course until your puppy has learned the 'stay' command, he's likely to wander over to see the person who's talking to him - I told you it wasn't going to be easy. If the light in the room is bright enough don't use the flash at all. Then you can focus directly on Fido's cute little face without danger of red-eye. A puppy's eyes are big and very expressive, have your camera focus on them for best effect. Posing for cute puppy photos For posed photos choose an uncluttered background of a color that will contrast nicely with Fido's coloring. Try to avoid windows, mirrors etc. as they not only reflect the flash but can make the photo confusing and 'messy' looking. If you actually get down on the floor and take the puppy pictures at Fido's eye level it can make for a stunning shot. The only problem is being stealthy enough that he doesn't realize your on the floor, because as soon as he does he's going to bound over to you and push his wet, cold little nose right up against the camera lens - guaranteed! Unstructured photos Some of the best cute puppy photos are the unstructured ones. Keep your camera handy and watch for moments that would make great photos, here are some ideas to get you thinking along the right lines - - Fido's first bath
- When he's trying to chew that ENORMOUS bone you bought for him
- The first time he sees the cat
- Barking at his reflection in the full length mirror
- When he's standing on his back legs trying to reach the lid of the trash can
Outdoor photos
Natural light is perfect for taking cute puppy photos, and it doesn't have to be bright sunlight. In fact a partly cloudy but clear day, or even a cold day when the air is sharp, work great. The main problem outdoors is keeping little Fido within range of your camera. There's always so many exciting things to explore outside. Again though you can take advantage of his natural curiosity to get some beautiful, candid shots. How about when he's playing in that huge pile of leaves? Trying to figure out what it is that's making that strange buzzing noise? Attempting to eat a dandelion? You get the idea.
Bright, direct sunlight could end up making your photo look 'washed out' or faded. And if the sun is behind you while Fido is looking at the camera his eyes will most likely look 'squinty' - not the effect you're after. To reduce the distraction of a 'busy' background get down and take the photo at puppy-eye-level and fairly close range. When you're taking photos outside it's advisable to have a 'helper' with you, and if it's someone who can run faster than your little furball so much the better!
If you're not in your own securely fenced yard, keep Fido on the leash at all times - that way the last photo you take of him won't show his little behind disappearing out of the park gates!Summer is almost here and if you're heading for the beach with Fido be sure to take the camera along. The light on the coast always makes for some of the best cute puppy photos.
Lights, camera...action!
One last tip. When you're trying to take cute puppy photos it's a good idea to use a high-speed film that is recommended for all types of light. Then you'll stand the best chance of capturing every one of those special puppy-parenting moments.Okay...you're ready to begin. Good luck and don't forget to put those photos in albums or scrapbooks as soon as you can to prevent them fading or gathering dust in your drawers. You can even frame one or two for your bookcase or desk..........or maybe even create your own 'gallery' by framing 6 or more and hanging them proudly on your walls.
