Dewormed puppy poops worms then struggles to poop only diarrea, is this normal?

by Amanda

9 week old pitbull puppy just got dewormed yesterday & vaccinations(DHPP). She pooped spaghetti like worms, and since has been struggling to poop. She has only had a little bit of diarrhea.

She is eating and drinking just fine. I don't know if this is normal or if I should be concerned.

Hi Amanda
Deworming medication is supposed to expel any worms that your pup may have. Generally they'll come out in the stools, and that can go on for a few days, depending on how many worms the puppy has.

In some cases, if they have a lot of worms, they may vomit them up. The medication can also upset a pups' tummy causing a bit of diarrhea. However, it shouldn't be severe or make the pup really ill.

As your little guy seems to be eating, drinking and acting normally, then I wouldn't worry too much unless the diarrhea and vomiting continue. If they do, take her to your veterinarian for an examination, to make sure everything is okay.

Best of luck with your pup, hope she's doing much better soon.

I have a 6 week old puppy, i picked her up saturday morning and took her right away to get her puppy shots and dewormer which was a saturday. But last night (tuesday) she had some diarrea that kinda shot out fast and this morning she still had some loose watery poop. She ate and drank and was playing fine. Now i just watched her pushing hard struggling to push out a small amount of loose stool. I had a puppy that got parvo and had diarrea , vomiting and after four days passed away. I'm just so scared that my new puppy is getting sick like she did. Since i got her i havent let her out side cause i was so scared she would get sick. how do i know if it is just worms coming out or if she is getting sick?
