Diarrhea

by Terri
(Indianapolis, IN)

My pup is 5 months old and we've had her for 2 weeks. She needs to go poo more than any pup I've ever had and it's very loose. I know that loose stools are very typical for pups but she's going 5 and 6 times a day and sometimes, it's not just loose, it's nearly liquid.

There's been no change to her diet, she gets no treats so that can't be the cause. There's been no loss of appetite either so I don't know if I should be concerned or not.

Hi Terri
I'm afraid I'm not a veterinarian, so I can't make a professional judgment. In my personal opinion, although what you're describing doesn't sound as though it's cause for serious concern at this point, it also isn't what I'd consider 'normal'.

You haven't changed her diet, but it could be that she is sensitive to an ingredient (or several ingredients) in the food you are giving her. I'd suggest SLOWLY changing over to a food specifically designed for dogs with food sensitivities/allergies. You can find a selection of these on my Dog Food Allergies page.

There are also natural supplements that you can give her which help to balance the digestive system, and are often helpful in this sort of situation. You can learn more about these on my Natural Remedies for Dogs page.

As long as she seems happy and healthy right now, except for this issue, I would try the above suggestions first. However, if you don't see any improvement within 4 - 6 weeks, I would take her to your veterinarian for a check up.

Hope this helps. Best of luck with your puppy.
