digging and scratching her bed after eating and she has just had pups

My chihuahua has just had pups 5 days ago. she isn't eating great but the vet said she's just feeling a bit sorry for herself at the moment.

But after she does eat she starts digging and scratching her bed,i wonder if her eating is giving her stomach pains that almost feel like contractions, thus the digging and eating less ?

HiSome dogs don't eat a lot in the first week or so after they've had pups. You'd think they would be hungry, but apparently not! It is important to make sure that she gets plenty of water though, she needs lots of fluids so that she can keep up the milk production.

The scratching and digging is probably just her nesting instinct, and it's a common behavior too. of course it's possible that she is having 'after pains' but as long as your vet says she is healthy I wouldn't worry too much.

If she doesn't start eating better soon though, or shows any signs of being unwell, take her to your vet for a check up. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

Best of luck with your dog and your puppies.

eclampsia- hypocalicmia- one of those kinds of things NEW
by: Anonymous

a small dog with pups can also get eclampsia. My shih tzu had 5 puppies and one night I woke up and she was acting weird and digging. luckily i thought it was serious and took her for a midnight ride to the vets.

eating problems after whelping
by: Anonymous

One of the things I've done with my dogs after they have pups is to give them some broth, chicken preferably. I save it anytime I cook chicken or beef and freeze it till we get new pups. The broth will encourage them to eat and drink more. Other than that, I think your mommy dog is acting pretty normal after having pups.

Keep your vet number close by at all times though, just in case. Good Luck

Dam not eating well...
by: Natalie

My Chihuahua had pups 9 days ago and she doesn't eat much either. My vet said to give her some NutriCal or similar product mixed with her food. Also, I have to tube feed one of the pups and after each feeding (2 hour intervals), I give the mom a few cc's of formula to drink. My vet gave her blessings for that, and it even states on the package that it's great for pregnant and nursing dogs. She loves it and is getting vitamins, calcium and calories from the "treat". It hasn't affected her bowels, either. That was a concern for me at first, but it was fine.

Good luck!
