Yummy Dog Birthday Cakes!

Are you throwing your pooch a birthday party? Do you need to know more about dog birthday cakes, recipes etc? If so, this article is for you.

dog birthday cake
Dog parties are getting pretty popular these days, and more and more puppy parents are having fun hosting all kinds of canine birthday bashes. It's a chance to really 'go to town' and both human and doggie guests can have a great time.

Of course in any birthday celebration the cake is one of the big attractions and dog birthday cakes are no exception.

Here are some tips and a couple of tasty recipes to help you make sure that Fifi's birthday party is the talk of the town.

Ingredients & Recipes

There are two ways to approach preparing a birthday cake for your pooch. Most cake recipes are not entirely suitable for dogs but can be used if they're modified to omit any dangerous or toxic ingredients.

For example, you can follow a traditional cake recipe but substitute wheat flour for the regular white flour, and make sure no chocolate or nuts are used. Carob products are a dog-safe alternative to chocolate. You can also add mashed bananas for a little extra flavor if you'd like to.

The traditional sugar frosting isn't a good idea, but on dog birthday cakes there are several other options you can try. Good frosting alternatives include

  • Peanut Butter (organic is best)
  • Cream Cheese
  • Cottage Cheese

Decorate the dog birthday cake with tiny dog bone biscuits, dog yogurt drops or something similar. If you don't want to use proper candles, 'Pupperoni' sticks make a great, edible alternative.

You can also make a super-easy, totally dog-friendly cake by following the recipe below. Just be warned that the two-legged guests (humans!) won't appreciate it and you may also want to include a more traditional cake for them to share!

The Burger Cake

Ingredients

  • 1lb ground minced beef
  • 2 medium sized carrots
  • 1 cup cooked rice (white or brown)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2lb cooked collard greens
  • 6 strips bacon, cooked
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese

Mix all the ingredients (except the bacon and cheese) together in a large bowl. Divide mixture into two. Put 1/2 of the mix into a greased, lined 9" cake pan and spread out evenly. Arrange the bacon strips on top of this layer and sprinkle with the grated cheese. Top with the second half of the mixture and spread out evenly.

Bake at 350F (180C) for about 45 minutes to an hour, or until cooked through. Pour off any excess fat and allow to cool before removing from the pan.

This cake can be frosted with any of the above frosting and decorated in the same way.

Here are a couple of other great books that will get your pup's mouth watering...

This is a really great book! It's absolutely jam-packed with creative recipes that are bound to be a hit with your puppy, and any other canine inhabitants of your household.

Tasty recipes, beautifully presented and accompanied by lots of adorable doggie photos - what more could you want?

With 50 great recipes, this book has something for everyone (er..dog!). There's even a special section devoted to dogs with special dietary needs.

The recipes are tasty and quick to make, plus their veterinarian approved, so you know those goodies Fifi is gobbling up, are also good FOR her (shh..don't tell her that though!)

Made to order dog birthday cakes

If you'd rather skip the actual baking part or don't want to spend any more time in the kitchen than you have to, there are alternatives.

Many dog, cat and specialty bakeries will bake and decorate a cake for you. You can choose from several different themes and recipes, and sometimes even have a custom made dog birthday cake designed especially for your little birthday girl.

The Healthy Hound Bakery has a huge selection of seriously drool-worthy, dog birthday cakes, gourmet dog treats, cookies, muffins, gift baskets and more. There's something for absolutely every occasion or event and every pup will find something (or several somethings) to suit his tastes.

They make everything from scratch. Totally homemade, with no preservatives, additives, or processed sugars. Only human grade meats (and no by products) are used and all recipes are veterinarian approved. The resulting healthy, super-tasty dog treats are fantastic.

Ordering your pup's birthday cake and treats online saves you time and money (not to mention the gas you'd use driving all over town). Just be sure no to leave it 'til the very last minute! Shipping doesn't usually take more than a few days, but it's always better to place your order in plenty of time.

Tip: Whatever type of doggie birthday cake you choose, don't allow the 4-legged guests to over indulge! It's pretty easy for them to end up with an upset tummy from unfamiliar food - not a good end to a wonderful party. A couple of bites of cake is usually enough!
