Dog scratching and biting himself

by Maureen

I sent my dog to the groomer 2 weeks ago and since then he has been scratching and biting around the base of his tail.

I have re-shampooed him twice with shampoo I bought from the vet (aloe & oatmeal) but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Is there something I can buy to stop this? I feel so bad for him.

Thanks

Hi Maureen
It does sound as though your dog may be suffering from an allergic reaction, or over-sensitivity, to a product that was used when he was groomed.

Excessive biting, licking and scratching, particularly at the belly, legs or tail area are classic signs.

I wouldn't recommend bathing him any more, as even with the mildest of shampoos, bathing takes moisture from the skin. Over dry skin only adds to the itching problem.

There are products on the market that can help relieve his discomfort though. The ones that contains hydrocortisone are often very effective. There are also food supplements that contain certain oils and other ingredients which can help to improve the condition of the skin from the inside out, as it were.

Check out my Canine Skin Allergies page for info. on these types of products.

If you don't see any improvement after using these products, I'd recommend talking to your vet. He may be able to suggest some other options.

Best of luck. Hope your little guy is feeling more comfortable soon.
