We have had our pure bred golden retreiver puppy for just about 4 months now, and today we took her to the vet to get her 2 booster shots. She was fine after, running around and everything and went swimming in the lake.
But its been about 4 hours since she got her shot and now she is very depressed looking and lazy and not her usual playful self and she is shivering a lot.
We have her sleeping by the fire place under blankets and she still gets violent waves of shivers. (the shivers aren't due to the fact that she was swimming cause she is all dry now) i was just wondering if this was normal after her shots, or if we should take her to the vet, i am getting mixed responses after looking it up on the internet and i am not sure what to do.
thank you
Hi
Many puppies experience some sort of reaction to their vaccinations
Mild reactions include swelling or a lump at the site of the vaccinations, lethargy, loss of appetite and possibly a low-grade fever.
These symptoms are usually fairly minor and disappear within a couple of days.
More serious reactions would include generalized swelling or a rash/hives over the whole body - particularly dangerous if the swelling is on the face/head/mouth. Difficulty breathing, disorientation or even seizures.
Most minor reactions don't require veterinary attention, although any of the symptoms listed in the more major category definitely do.
Looking 'depressed/lazy' is pretty normal and not a major problem. However, if your pup is shivering a lot I would suggest calling your vet, or a 24 hour emergency clinic, and asking their advice. It could be that she's running a fever. In my opinion, if in doubt it's always better to err on the side of being too careful!
Best of luck. Hope she's back to her old self soon.
