female puppy after second round of worm medication

by Peggy
(Oak Ridge, Tn.)

We have taken in a mixed breed female puppy approx.3 months old, weighing about 18 pounds. we have given her 1st parvo/distemper and have been treating her for a case of worms. she is due for her last round of worm meds in a couple of weeks, also of course, she will soon be getting her rabies vac.

The concern..my daughter and I have been watching her and examining her feces during this period and noticed the worms seem to be gone. we noticed the worms looked different as the medicine began to work, and in between several stools or "days", they appeared to look different in color. tonight my daughter noticed a tiny reddish/white spot the puppy was sniffing and noticed it had a strong odor.(the spot appeared on the laundry room floor where we have been keeping her. could this be a part of the de-worming, or another female-type of secretion?

we have 3 other dogs and they are very healthy, but we took this pup in to keep her from being impounded and can't afford much cost. any help at all would be deeply appreciated,as we would like to keep her and she is otherwise very happy, eats well, is trained already, etc..

I am praying we are worrying for no reason, but just want to be cautious! There were 7 dogs in this pups litter! Many Thanks!

Hi Peggy
God Bless you for taking in this little girl, sounds as though she desperately needed a new, loving home.

I can't say for sure, but from what you're describing I would think the changes in stools and the secretion you noticed are related to the deworming medication. She's too young to be going into season, and the only other possibility I can think of would be a UTI (urinary tract infection), but there would be other symptoms such as frequent urination when she only passes a few 'drops' at a time.

Many puppies experience diarrhea (sometimes vomiting), and intestinal irritation after they've been dewormed. This does eventually wear off once the medication has done it's job and is out of the puppy's system.

If this puppy has only had one set of vaccinations she will need more, and of course you know about the Rabies.

If she isn't showing any other symptoms of illness or disease, such as vomiting, repeated diarrhea, extreme lethargy, inability to keep food/water down and so on, then chances are she's just fine.

If you're at all worried though you can always call your vet and ask their advice. Or for a small fee (considerably less than a vet visit) you can get professional help from an online vet on my Ask A Vet page. Only use this for non-emergency questions though!

Best of luck with your puppy, hope things work out well for all of you.
