fur loss of little dog....

by Heena Rastogi

i have a 2 months old pomeranian pup..he is losing his hair around eyes and tail..we even went to a vet but after checking him he was not sure if he has mite problem or not..

he said it could be because of vitamin & calcium deficiency because he licks the walls some times..he even bites his legs and scratches around ears and neck but not on the face..

we don't know what to do because his fur loss around eyes and tail is increasing..

Hi Heena
If your pup has a parasitic condition such as Mange, caused by mites, then your vet should be able to diagnose this by taking a skin scraping.

Being that the hair loss is around the eyes and on the face, I would make this my first guess, so have your vet do the necessary skin scrapings so that you can get an accurate diagnosis.

If the skin scrapings don't show any mites, then it is possible that the symptoms are caused by dog allergies of some sort, perhaps dog food allergies. You could try changing his diet, and try to find what is at the root of the problem. If you're not already feeding a premium dog food there is a chance he's deficient in some vitamin/minerals, but I'm not sure that it could be severe enough to cause these symptoms.

There are many products that you can use to help relieve the itching and discomfort while you wait for a diagnosis, check out my Canine Skin Allergies page for some of the best ones around.

Your vet is the person who needs to help you figure out why your dog is suffering like this though. Please take your dog back to the vet and get him more help. I wish you the best of luck and hope you can find out what's causing the problems.
