I have just bought a lovely puppy, i have had her just 2 days.
I took her for her 1st vaccination and mentioned to my vet that i noticed she pees in her sleep, he thought it might be that she's nervous, any ideas?
Hi Ann
Your veterinarian is in a better position than I am in terms of figuring out what's wrong with your puppy because there are several possibilities.
Nervousness or anxiety could conceivably cause this, but it would be unlikely. A urinary tract infection is more likely as these are fairly common in puppies, particularly in female puppies... and cause a strong urge for frequent urination. Loss of bladder control can happen with a UTI. You vet can diagnose this with a urine sample and antibiotics are needed if she does have an infection.
Other possibilities include immature nerve/muscle control, a hormone imbalance and more. But only your vet can make an accurate diagnosis as he/she can run any necessary tests and actually conduct a 'hands-on' exam.
It's not normal for a puppy to pee while sleeping, so I'd definitely recommend following up with your vet if this behavior continues.
Sorry I couldn't help more but I wish you the best of luck and hope that she's doing much better soon.
