The Golden Retriever
The Golden Retriever is a super popular dog and the consummate family companion. Beautiful to look at, and with a personality to match, this breed deserved to be the Number 2 dog in the USA (according to AKC figures). Goldens are one of the breeds that appears on the list of Best Dog Breeds for Families, and they deserve to be there. Of course, not every Golden Retriever is going to have the stable, loving and joyous temperament that you expect, so take care when choosing a puppy and be sure to look at his parents and the home where he spent his first months of life.

In a nutshell!
This is an affectionate, friendly, family oriented breed. An adorably 'goofy' dog that can be slow to mature. Relatively easy to train but requires lots of exercise (especially when young) and regular obedience training. One of the 'down sides' of owning a Golden, is that you're likely to find hair all over the place - literally. So, if you're very house-proud and/or object to wearing a golden 'fur coat' yourself, this may not be the ideal breed for you. Also, people with allergies should avoid this breed and check out more hypoallergenic dogs instead. Regular brushing and grooming is definitely required to control shedding. A daily brushing and combing can really help to keep the loose hair in your home within manageable limits. Check out my Grooming page for tips and advice on this. And I'd personally recommend investing in a FURminator Grooming Tool . It does a fantastic job of removing loose/dead hair from that thick undercoat and can reduce shedding by up to 90%. It's worth it's weight in gold.... or should that be Golden? :o)
