Hi my female had 9 puppies, she died when they were only 1 week old ... a week ago they got coronavirus , they were only 3 weeks old at the time so they got real sick for a week I had to keep them hydrated they got really skinny almost looked like they would die...
It's been two weeks now and they are gaining weight now and look good, I noticed last week they had some hair missing around their eyes but only there and they have great coats no missing hair or itching, is this the cause of being so sick for a week and almost dying ?
thank you ..
Hi
First of all, congratulations on taking such good care of these puppies and helping them to overcome their coronavirus. You've done a great job :)
This hair loss sounds to me as though it may be a very early sign of mange - which is a skin condition caused by tiny mites. It's one of the problems that can occur when a puppy's immune system is compromised (as your pups are due to the virus they had).
Sometimes this is all you'll see and as their immune system gets stronger the mites will disappear. But, more commonly it will progress and you'll start to see hair loss on the muzzle and possibly on the front legs, then the rest of the body. It doesn't generally itch.
If this happens your vet can make a diagnosis by taking a small skin scraping and looking at it under a microscope for the mites. Treatment is usually straightforward and is often a dip or shampoo.
You can read more about this condition here... Mange In Dogs.
I wish you the very best of luck with your puppies and hope they all grow up to be big, strong and healthy.
