head injury in chihuahua puppy

my female chihuahua had an injury to her head by my big dog hitting her with her paw. A lump developed right away the size of golf ball.

We iced it down and reduced it to marble size. A day later the bump is gone but she is a little swollen between her eyes.

She is acting her normal self with her attitude, eating, drinking, defecating, urinating. Her eyes are normal following my finger.

Should we be concerned since she is acting normal and lump is gone?

Hi
Tiny dogs like chihuahuas are easily injured as they are pretty 'delicate' in construction. Chihuahuas also often have a 'soft-spot' on the top of their heads that is particularly vulnerable to damage - and it can result in serious injury if they are hit there.

However, it does sound as though your pup has managed to avoid real damage, and as she seems fine and it's now 24 hours since the accident, chances are that she is going to be okay.

BUT - as with humans, any head injury should always be taken seriously, and if I were in your position I would talk with my vet and explain what happened and find out whether or not he thinks it's necessary to examine your little girl.

Head injuries can be unpredictable, and symptoms can show up even several days after the incident, and need attention. I would definitely recommend keeping a very close eye on her for a while too.

I'm sorry that I can't be more specific in my answer, but it's impossible for me to say for sure if she's going to be okay, however your vet should be able to put your mind at rest.

Best of luck with your pup, hope she is 100% healthy soon.

my poor little tea cup deer chihuahua head got ran over. She lost eye site and is in credical condition. the vet has imformed me that she has brain damage to her poor little head, but she is still alive. I have to decide on keepin her alive or putting her to sleep. I really want to keep her alive, but seeing how i am on medicaid and have no income, how would i support her pills? Money is just an object I want her alive! I think she would be differant when she hilled but i dont think she would want to be dead... crying cant stop help?????!!!

Update on my Chipoo Bubby :) NEW

he is perfectly back to normal :) if you have this happen to your dog don't worry its just a concision/shock and they will come out of it slowly. my puppy didn't have vomiting or bleeding though. we just kept him warm, he was watched 24/7, we fed him liquid food through a dropper, and made sure he knew we loved him. he slowly got better and hes running around like a normal dog now :) i will say this though... we took him to the vet and they tried charging us $1,000 to run tests on him. they were only try to take our money bc he could only get better or worse. they cant really do anything for your dog except watch him like you could. so dont give in to the vets bc all they want to do is take your money!!

Puppy head Injury will he ever be the same? NEW
by: Anonymous

i have a 7 week old puppy. He is a chi-poodle (chihuahua poodle mix?) He is the sweetest, friendliest dog, following everyone everywhere and being the greatest pup ever. Last night i fell off the couch on top of him and he seemed in serious pain. We took him to a 24hr vet, and they analyzed. His vitals were fine except for his temp being a little low (which has recovered now). We took him home, he was drooling a fair amount (which has slowed down now 14hrs later). At this point in time, he is able to drink water from a spoon, he eats liquified food from a syringe. We have given him syrup to keep his blood sugar levels up throughout the night. What we think is that he has brain trauma, he rolls around and cannot stand. I don't think he knows which way is up... His breathing is okay, his temperature is okay, but his gums are pink. I understand he may just be in shock, and that there is a chance he may have permanent damage. That was all Saturday night but its been more than 24 hours and now he seems to be coming around. he cant walk yet but he can crawl even though its a bit wobbly. hes still eating and drinking the same way but he can do it by himself. he wags his tail when he sees us and licks our face when we go to kiss him. he went potty (poop&pee). But even though i see him getting better i still want to know if hes going to ever be able to walk or function by himself.
