House Training Older Puppy

Is it harder to house train an older puppy? We have a 6 month old lab that has had some training but has mostly been outdoors.

We want to make him a house dog, and are worried that he won't take to the training.

Hi
At 6 months of age your pup is still young enough to learn new things quickly, and old enough to have good bladder/bowel control. Also, having spent a lot of time outdoors, he will be accustomed to eliminating there, and this will be his preferred 'potty spot'.

All in all, everything is in your favor here. However, this WILL be new to him, so you will need to supervise him closely, be patient if (or when) there are 'mistakes', and I'd definitely recommend using a crate. Crate training is very effective, and the process the same, no matter what age your pup/dog is.

I would also recommend that you make sure your pup is neutered, if he's not already. This will help to prevent him 'marking' any 'new' territory indoors. He's still young enough to be able to be discouraged from this behavior, and 'belly bands' work well if necessary to begin with.

Best of luck with your pup.
