How long does separation anxiety in Bichons usually last?
I got a Bichon Frise a little over three weeks ago and he is about 17 weeks old.
He does not like his crate at all and whines, cries, hollars and yelps endlessly. I praise him when he's quiet in the crate and that's the only time I take him out. I try to make it a fun place that he likes to be in. I also feed him in there sometimes.
I believe this is separation anxiety. What do you suggest and how long does this usually last in Bichon Frises?
Hi This may not be full-blown separation anxiety, but your pup obviously is anxious and stressed in his crate. This isn't unusual, many puppies don't like being crated at first, and some are more stubborn about complaining than others.
Your puppy is a bit older and if he's never been crated before you got him, it may take him longer than an 8 week old puppy to adjust.
You're already doing the right things, by trying to make his experience with the crate a positive one, and not taking him out while he's crying. It may just take time, patience and consistency for him to adapt.
I'd recommend that you read my Separation Anxiety in you Dog page and also the other relevant pages that link to it. There are lots of tips and ideas to help you deal with this, plus toys and techniques and herbal products to reduce anxiety.
If you find nothing seems to help, talk to your vet or a trainer and they may be able to give you some more advice. Best of luck, hope he settles down soon.
