I didnt know my 18 month old chihuahua was pregnant!!
(Asbury park, nj )
Hello i recently got a dog from a woman who was no longer able to take care of her, and i didn't know that she was pregnant. thank goodness she's only given birth to one pup but she's still crying after birth and looking around my house to see if there's anymore im guessing.
Her birth wasn't very messy at all i've checked her stomach to see if she still had anything else inside of her or if the placenta could possibly still be inside of her, i know that i should be taking her to the vet i just thought that i'd be able to be helped just a little more first before i take her to the vet.
Generally a healthy dog doesn't really need a lot of help to deliver puppies, just someone there for moral support or to help in case of problems.
Small breeds like chihuahua's or yorkies can have more problems as they have very small birth canals. However, it seems as though your dog has managed okay. Do bear in mind though that there can be up to 2 hours between each pup (normally anything between 10 minutes and an hour, but can be shorter or longer) so your dog may still have more pups to deliver. If she continues to have contractions but no puppies arrive, or if she seems very upset or unsettled call your veterinarian.
Regardless, it's definitely a good idea to have her checked out by your own veterinarian to make sure that there are no retained puppies or placenta as that can lead to serious issues.
Make sure she has a warm, safe place to make her 'nest' and nurse her puppy/ies so that she feels secure. Don't disturb her unnecessarily but make sure she gets to eat, drink and potty regularly.
Hope this helps, best of luck with your new 'family'.
