I have a 6-week-old basset hound puppy that won't eat and has gas
My wife and I just brought home a 6-week-old basset hound puppy a few days ago.
Up until today, he has been fine, but this morning he woke up with a gurgly belly and gas and he won't eat.
Should we be worried?
Hi Andrew At only 6 weeks old your little guy should really still be with his momma and littermates. Pups shouldn't be rehomed until they are at least 8 weeks old. He is a very tiny baby right now!
If you changed his puppy food from the one he was eating at the breeders, it's possible that the change has just 'caught up with him' and his tummy is a bit upset. Or it could be that he's eaten something he shouldn't as puppies have a habit of ingesting just about anything they can get their tiny teeth into.
However, if his symptoms only last 12 - 24 hours, he doesn't get worse or show other gastro-intestinal symptoms mentioned above, and eats/drinks and plays normally I wouldn't panic at this point. I'd also recommend reading my Bringing Home A New Puppy page as it's possible he's just going through the normal 'transition phase' that most pups experience when they come into their new home.
However, with a puppy, it's always better to be safe than sorry, so if you're at all worried about him, take him to your vet for a check up to be safe. Best of luck.
