Is it normal for a puppy to have a dry nose?

(phoenix)

We just got a 13 week old german shorthair puppy two days ago. He is sleeping a lot and his nose is dry.

Is this normal? When he is awake he plays hard, but he sleeps very soundly.

Hi
A puppy, or dog, with a dry nose isn't necessarily sick. He may just be hot. Summer heat, air conditioning or central heating in the winter can all cause a dogs nose to be dry - especially when sleeping.

If he seems otherwise healthy (ie is eating and drinking normally, seems playful, bright-eyed and alert when awake, isn't suffering from diarrhea and/or vomiting), then I wouldn't worry too much about this.

I always recommend taking a new puppy to your own vet for a check up within 48 hours or so of getting them home. It helps to ensure there are no underlying health issues and you can also get started on vaccinations and deworming.

As a new puppy owner you might find my New Puppy Care page helpful.

Best of luck with your new pup.
