My miniature schnauzer just had puppies by c-section, she had 3. one is very very small, and we are bottle feeding and separating her from the others to be with mom alone to feed.
What should I watch for? She seems healthy but doesn't seem to be growing at all. And isn't eating much. I'm worried about her. What can I do to insure her survival?
Also, They are 3 days old FYI. The others are thriving and growing daily. Any info. that would help my baby would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Dawn
Hi Dawn
If you're feeding this little one with puppy formula and are keeping her warm and comfortable, you're already doing pretty much all you can do for her.
She may just be smaller than the others, but perfectly healthy, or she may have some health issues that have caused her to be smaller. I would recommend having your veterinarian check her out to make sure that she's otherwise healthy.
I know it can be worrying to hand-raise a puppy, and once she's a bit bigger and stronger I would try to put her back with her momma if possible. As there are only three puppies, she shouldn't have to compete for a nipple to nurse on. Her mothers' milk and attention would be good for her.
I have a page that is designed to help people who are hand raising abandoned, rejected or orphaned puppies. You can find it here, it has tips and advice that you will probably find helpful.
Just give this puppy lots of love and attention the way you are doing and hopefully she will be fine. Best of luck.
