The Labrador Retriever

It seems that everyone loves the Labrador Retriever! The Lab is the Number 1 dog in the USA (according to AKC figures) - and if you've ever owned, or even met one you'll know why.

The ultimate all-round dog

black labrador retriever puppy Originally bred as a hunter and water retriever, they are still a hugely popular gun dogs (as well as being the Number 1 family dog for many years). Today Labs are frequently used search and rescue dogs and service dogs, jobs which they do with enthusiasm and skill.

AKC Group: Sporting Group

Country of Origin: Newfoundland, Canada

Size: Medium to Large

Height: 21.5 - 24.5 inches

Weight: 55 - 80 lbs

Color: Black, Yellow (anywhere from light cream to fox red), Chocolate

Temperament: Sociable, loyal and loving

Activity Level: High (particularly during puppy hood)

Grooming: Minimal. Regular brushing.

Special Needs: Labrador Retrievers need plenty of exercise, puppies especially LOVE to play. Regular obedience training.

Possible Health Problems: Hip Dysplasia, PRA

PRA (progressive retinal atrophy)

In a nutshell!

The Labrador Retriever is #1 for lots of reasons. It's a great all-round dog for families. Labs love the whole world and are great with adults, children and other dogs.

Friendly, sweet and eager to please this dog should learn commands quickly. Regular obedience training is recommended and tons of daily exercise is a must (as is lots of love and attention). Some Labs can be a little high-strung and nervous, this seems to occur most often in chocolate labs.

If you want the truly blocky, otter-tail type Labrador, look for English bloodlines as the American lines tend towards being lighter in terms of build.

Love Labs? Then you've got to have one of these!
