Hi
I'm afraid I can't say for sure why your pup is coughing like this, but there are two likely choices.

The first is that he is 'reverse sneezing' - this is a sort of bronchial 'spasm' and sounds like a cross between a sneeze and a cough (or it could sound like a seal!). It's most common in small or tiny breed puppies, especially those with shortened muzzles.

It's not anything to worry about really, and unless he seems sick in any other way I wouldn't be too concerned. The 'sneezing' in this sort of problem often comes on when the pup is excited or upset, or has been exercising. You can sometimes stop it by gently rubbing his throat, or holding two fingers gently over his nostrils for a few seconds.

The other possibility is that he has an infection of some sort, perhaps kennel cough, especially if he's not been fully vaccinated and has been around other dogs. Kennel cough or an upper respiratory tract infection can cause coughing and congestion. It will also often cause other symptoms such as a loss of appetite, low energy level or lethargy, sometimes discharge from the nose and so on.

If your pup seems unwell in any way, please have your veterinarian examine him as it's always better to be safe than sorry with puppies.

Best of luck.
