My 10 month old Mastiff is very congested. I started her on Benedryl Friday and there was some improvement. However, as of today she is still sneezing, coughing and isn't eating as well as normal. (Although she has had 1/2# of boiled chicken breast and rice today - she usually eats even more since she is a puppy).
She is sleeping more than normal and seems lethargic - but I would be too with the amount of Benedryl she has taken! Are there any remedies I can use to help her recover? Perhaps a humidifier? Should I be very concerned and take her immediately to e-vet? It is hard to say when mastiff is overly lethargic - she has sleepy spells now and then anyway during her growth spurts.
We will see the vet in the morning - but I would like to do what I can to help her feel better through the night. She is snoring and seems miserable.
Hi Valerie
Congestion like this really needs to be evaluated by a veterinarian as an upper respiratory tract infection can lead to pneumonia which is very serious.
Benadryl can be helpful for congestion and other symptoms that are related to dog allergies but won't help with an infection.
Hopefully she will have already been examined by your veterinarian by now and you'll have any treatment/medications necessary. If she hasn't seen your vet yet then I'd strongly recommend that you get her an appointment asap so that she can get started on the road to recovery.
Best of luck, hope she's doing much better soon.
