My 2 week old puppy has yellowish mucus coming from his nose and is congested. Help!

My dog had puppies and all of them have been doing well until 3 days ago when the 2 smallest dogs started having yellowish mucus coming out of their nose and one of them is congested.

Other than that their going to the bathroom ok and their eating fine, but as a precaution i separated them away from the others and have been giving them puppy formula.

i will be bringing them to the vet tomorrow but i'd like to know if it's something i have to worry about and if so what could it be. thank you!

Hi
It sounds as though your puppies may have an upper respiratory tract infection (sort of like the common cold in humans). However young puppies are very vulnerable to illness and disease and even something simple like this could develop into pneumonia which is very serious.... the congestion you hear could be the beginning of something like that.

They definitely need to be examined by your vet so that he can decide whether they need treatment.

These type of symptoms can also be early signs of several contagious dog illnesses that puppies are prone to catching. Again, your vet will be able to determine whether this is the case here, or whether it's a respiratory infection.

I wish you the best of luck and hope these little guys get better soon.

I have a 2 year old boxer who just gave birth to 10 healthy happy puppies on christmas eve. Two weeks later my dog got a mammary gland infection in one of her milk sacs. Unfortunately when I called the vet they didn't know the milk was as bad as it was and instructed me to "let the puppies nurse extra" on the nipple associated with the hardened milk sac. I did this and noticed pus coming from the nipple so I made the decision that the vet must have made some sort of mistake. THe next day I took my dog in and she got antibiotics for the infection and the puppies were instructed to cease nursing and would now have to be fed a mixture of formula and gruel for the next few weeks. My roommate took one of the puppies into her room that had a cat and dog living in there that had never been around the puppy. A few days after he had been going into that room wrapped in a blanket he came down with a sneezing and green mucus discharge coming from his nose along with refusing to eat or drink and throwing up his food because he couldnt breath when I fed him. He was given electrolytes yesterday to help him fight the dehydration and the vet just thought that would help him along with amoxicilian for him and the other 9 pups. A girl puppy also was having symptoms shortly after and I didn't know if it was from a kennel cough they they could have picked up from the other animals or from the bad milk. Now over night all of my puppies are showing symptoms of this "flu like" sickness and I just had to take him in for more electrolytes, special food, and 3 shots of antibiotics to fight the respiratory infection. If your puppy is having symptoms like this please don't wait to take him in I have been to the vet everyday and have needed 100s of dollars in vet meds to help my puppies survive. I didn't breed for the money I just wanted my girl to have puppies and be a mother once in her life. I will cut my losses if they can all just make it through this illness. I have differing opinions that I have found online such as "its just a cold that will run its course" and "your dog will die" I don't know how life threatening this is but all I can say from experience is that the very sick puppies don't look like they are in good shape and although the vet doesn't recommend separating the sick from healthy I have a dog I'm keeping who has been separated the whole time and he is one of the 3 that show no signs of the sickness, maybe this is a coincidence or maybe i saved him from contracting this horrible illness either way it's something to think about if you are put in this same situation. If anyone has advice or a similar experience please post it as more info and knowledge on veterinary medicine is better and helpful to future people who may be put in this nightmare.
