My 3 Year Old Maltese Poodle Mix has Suddenly Started Yelping for No Apparent Reason
Our 3 Year Old Maltese Poodle Mix has suddenly started yelping for no apparent reason. He will even cower in the corner suddenly. He acts like he is hurt or in pain but then returns to normal. We don't know what could be causing this. Other times he is just fine.
We had him to a vet already and they did x-rays and blood tests but nothing was found. At first we thought that an older couple we had left him with for a few weeks while were moving may have accidentally tripped over him. But that was back in September.
We were recently visiting friends when the husband in the household stood up suddenly to go to the kitchen, He stumbled over our dog. He did not touch or hurt our dog in any way. The dog was startled and got up suddenly and yelped. He yelped as though in panic. Since we have been back home he yelps at any sudden movement. He yelps when We don't know what could be causing this.
Is there something we are missing?
It sounds as though your dog is acting out of fear or anxiety rather than a physical issue - especially as you've had x-rays, blood tests and a veterinary exam done.
It's perfectly possible that something happened during his stay with this other family that scared him significantly. It could have been that he got hurt, or that he was just very frightened... and that this has left a lasting impression on him.
Also, as you've moved house that is probably causing him some stress as well. Most dogs get anxious when there's a big change in their life or family and moving house is definitely a biggie from his point of view. This is normal.
For now all you can really do is to treat him with love and affection, and try to keep your household as calm as possible and limit any encounters or experiences that could trigger one of his 'attacks'. Keep the atmosphere at home upbeat and cheerful though and don't 'baby' him. Also try to maintain a predictable routine for his days, as this will help him to feel calmer and more secure.
Hopefully, given time he will regain his confidence and as he feels less anxious this yelping and cowering should disappear.
There are some natural products that you can use around the home, and also some natural, herbal supplements that can help reduce anxiety in dogs. I'd recommend that you check out this page on my site.... Dog Separation Anxiety Medication as it features many of these products.
I hope this helps and wish you all lots of luck. Your little guy should be back to his happy self given some time :)
