Our puppy is a boxer, we took him to the vet to cut his tail (they said the younger the better) the surgery got a little bit infected and the stitches came off. So we took it back to the vet and he give the puppy shots (1 for infection and 2 other he said to increase appetite) this has been going on for 4 days already (we take him everyday to get the shot).
He is still breastfeeding but this morning he started vomiting and has zero energy is just lying down on the floor, could this be because of so much medicine in his system? please help we are in Nicaragua (we were transferred from Miami) and the town we live in, the vets specialize more in cattle than any other animal.
He won't even get up from the floor but is aware with his eyes open and licking us as we pet him.
Any help will be greatly appreciate it!!!
thank you very much
Hi Claudia
Your puppy has been through a lot for such a little guy, and his tiny body is probably exhausted.
I'm afraid I'm not a veterinarian so I can't give you any professional advice, but personally I would probably stop the shots he is getting to increase his appetite unless he's extremely underweight and refusing to eat.
At 5 weeks old he should be ready to be weaned over to eating a premium puppy food soaked in warm water. If his momma will still let him nurse he can continue to do that for another week or so, but he should also be given water to lap.
The antibiotics are important to take and should cure the infection from the surgery, and if he eats properly and gets plenty of rest hopefully he will make a full recovery.
Obviously your vet is the professional though, so as far as possible rely on his advice/opinions but don't overtax this little puppys' body - give nature a chance to help him feel better.
Best of luck, he's a cutie and I hope he's doing much better soon.
