My 8 Year old chihuahua mix is losing weight, drinking a lot, and has fleas. HELP!

by Susan
(Pennsylvania)

I don't know what is wrong with our doggie. He is 8 years old. He got fleas and it has been a hard time getting rid of them. We give him a flea bath every other day. Now he is lethargic, and drinks a lot, then pees all over himself and the house. he has lost weight, and is just not himself.

Does anyone know what might be wrong? I would love to take him to a vet, but I am on unemployment, and have 3 kids that need to be fed. I took him in when the neighbor said she was taking him to the SPCA, where they would just put him to sleep. He was fine when I took him a few months ago.

I really need some help. He is a great little guy.
Thanks, Susan

Hi Susan
I'm sorry to hear about the problems your little dog is experiencing. I do understand that finances can be tough, but I'm afraid only a veterinarian can determine what is causing your dogs symptoms.

It's possible that he has a urinary tract infection, or it could be diabetes or another health issue that is causing the thirst, frequent urination and weight loss.

Fleas can be eliminated by using a products such as Frontline plus on your dog, and treating his bedding and living environment with a flea spray/powder.

I strongly recommend that you have your dog examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. It may be that his problems are fairly minor and can be cleared up without too much expense. Generally, the sooner you get a diagnosis and treatment for a health issue the less expensive it is in the long run.

Some vets offices may allow you to have him treated on a payment plan type option, but you'd probably need to call around and talk to several practices to find out if this in an option. Your local SPCA may be able to tell you if there are any low-cost clinics or similar near you.

I really wish I could help more, but your dog needs to be seen by a qualified veterinarian so that you can find out what is wrong and get him back on the road to health. I wish you the very best of luck with him.
