My Blue Nose Pitbull Puppy

by Emily
(Philadelphia, PA)

Hi my name is Emily and me and my boyfriend recently bought a blue nose pit.

All he really does is sleep a lot and he gets the hick ups when he falls asleep. He has also been having diarrhea.

Is this normal for a 6 week old puppy please help me im clueless.

Hi Emily
At 6 weeks old, your puppy is really too young to be away from his momma, he's still a tiny baby, and puppies should stay with their doggie family until at least 8 weeks old.

But, he's with you now, so just realize he's like a human baby, needs lots of sleep - plus love, attention and gentle discipline.

Many puppies (especially the young ones) go through an adjustment period when they first go to their new homes. They may sleep a lot, lose their appetite and seem 'sad', they're usually a bit scared and are homesick.

If he's experienced a sudden change in diet (for example, he's now eating a totally different food from the one he was eating at the breeders house), he may well have some diarrhea too.

There's a lot to learn when you first have a puppy, so I think my New Puppy care page will help you out a lot. It has tips and advice on what you need to know and take care of, plus links to lots of other useful information.

It's important to make sure that your puppy isn't sick though. If he is also vomiting, his eyes seem dull, or he's totally disinterested in everything and won't eat or drink, he needs to be seen by your vet right away. Check out mydog illnesses page for info. on how to recognize the most common canine diseases, and my Puppy Diarrhea page to learn how to tell when diarrhea could signify serious illness.

Best of luck with your puppy!

Hick ups
by: Anonymous

usually when they get the hick ups just means they are scared. Will take a little for them to adjust. Just give them comfort in the mean time. They will come around.

My Blue Nose Pup Remy
by: Blue Nose Pup Owner

Hey just wanted to help you out. I have a 7 1/2 week old blue nose puppy and she is sleeping right now as I speak.
She'll have so much energy for about half an hour then she'll gas out towards the last 5 minutes of the 30 minute period. I wondered why that would happen but it makes sense when you look at it. pups at this age are still very young and need to grow. so sleeping is just what they do.

I've only had her for roughly 2 weeks now and She also had diahrea when i first got her. Her vet said the cause was worms. I found this out by bringing in a fecal sample. They then scanned the poo and found out she had worms. She was then dewormed along with her shots so now her stool is pretty solid. Take caution in getting dewormed and shots because she did not want to be picked up, it seemed to hurt her, perhaps it was a side effect of soreness but that phase soon faded away through the night. About 98% of puppies have worms due to the mother passing it to them during pregnancy. deworming is the way to go. i got her dewormed at a local petsmart by the way.

My pup Remy and I hope our information and experiences helped you out.

Your puppy!
by: Andrea A.

I got my pitbull puppy when he was 6 weeks old too!

Here are a few things I've learned this past week and a half that might help you.
Anytime you change the food he eats, he's prone to get diarrhea. That's why, if you're gonna change his food, you gradually add more portions of the new food, until the old one is gone. This helps A LOT!
Watch his stomach, and see if he's biting at his legs. He doesn't have fleas! If he's itchy, and is scratching and biting at himself, and you see a rash on his stomach, he's allergic to his food. Change his food immediately in this case only. He'll feel better after about a day and a half.
To help house break him. Don't give him food 4 hours before bedtime, and water 2 hours before.
He needs a pottybreak after eating, sleeping, playing, and drinking. If you hold him for extended periods of time, put him down outside before letting him down on your carpet!
Hiccups are normal, they get them quite often. I wake my puppy up, and rub his belly till the hiccups go away, and then let him go back to sleep.
If you have any other questions, and need answers pretty fast, my email is aalvarez07@wou.edu.
I've been raising and training chihuahuas successfully since I was 8. And they're harder to train. Hope your puppy feels better!
