My Chiwawa Goldie is a six month old and her vagina is swollen

Goldie has not had any interactions with any other dogs so i'm not sure what's wrong, she started bleeding and over the last two weeks it seems like her vagina had gotten extremely larger than normal and i couldn't understand why????

Please Help!!!!

Hi Monique
It sounds very much as though your puppy is experiencing her first 'heat cycle' or 'season' most pups will have this somewhere between 6 and 9 months of age, the smaller the dog generally the earlier it starts.

This is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. It may last up to 3 weeks, occasionally a bit longer, but the first season can be a bit unpredictable.

After this first time she will probably come into season twice a year, approx once every 6 months or so. Occasionally some dogs, and some breeds even, will have different length cycles but this is the average and most likely what your dog will experience.

Be sure to keep her away from any male dogs during this time as she is at risk of getting pregnant and she is still way too young for that.

I'd strongly recommend having her spayed so that you can prevent any further seasons, unwanted pregnancies and give her protection from several reproductive organ disorders and conditions. You can learn more about this here... Dog Spaying

Talk with your vet.

It definitely sounds like your introduction to her heat cycle. Discuss spaying her with your vet. There are reasons you should understand regarding your ability to care for a intact female, and also what impact spaying will have. I have giant breed females, Newfs, and spaying before two years can create a host of very expensive, and debilitating, issues. However, if your not prepared to deal with heat cycles, then spaying is certainly a solid alternative.

Get your small female dog fixed as soon as possible. You probably don't intend to breed her.get her fixed too many stories about owners not being proactive and spaying dogs.If you watch your dog urinate you will see that her privates come into contact with ground and other places where bacteria breed.probably urinary diseases is the biggest reason to get these dogs fixed besides the blood involved with heat cycles is quite annoying.
