We are fostering two abandoned puppies. Their eyes are not open yet and the shelter thinks that they are about a week old maybe a week and a half.
We have fed them today, but there is no poop in their box. Now, I know that everyone poops, but should I be very worried about this or should I wait one more day?
Hi
Newborn puppies don't have muscle control to poop on their own, they need to be stimulated to do so.
The momma dog does this by licking their bellies and genital area, you can mimic this by rubbing these areas with a warm, wet washcloth or cotton ball. This needs to be done after every feed. By the end of their first month of life they will begin to develop the necessary control to poop without help.
I think you will find my New Born Puppies page helpful while you raise these 'babies', it has lots of information, tips and advice on raising orphaned or rejected pups.
Best of luck with them!
